Australasia
Australasia is generally relatively safe, especially Australia & New Zealand. The size and diversity of environment tends to surprise people travelling in Australia for the first time. If you are driving, ensure you take ample supplies of water, fuel etc, as the distances are vast. Also, it's important to appreciate the strength of the sun, contracting skin cancer is a threat and something the Australians are well aware of.
For those planning to explore Indonesia, be aware of the ongoing terrorist threat against westerners, check situation on www.smartraveller.gov.au or https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice
Australia | Sydney - recommendations
For cheap hostels, try mad monkey Potts point. It's one of the best hostels for value. £20 a night is the cheapest in Sydney, but the staff make fresh dinners every night and there's a good atmosphere it's a proper backpackers hostel.
If you want somewhere a little nicer, try Wake Up Central, Nomads or YHA Central which has a rooftop pool. They're all around £35 a night.
For going out, Scary Canary, Helm and Bungalow 8 are my favourites and they're all within walking distance of central, or you can get the tram to circular quay. For cheap drinks try Maloneys for $10 beer jugs in happy hour or the Shark hotel which is $5 schooners and $10 cocktails all day.
For food go to El Camino for taco Tuesday for $2 dollar tacos. Go to Chambers Fine Coffee for nice breakfast.
Bondi Tony's in Bondi Junction do amazing burgers.
In Manly, try the Italian restaurant on the Main Street, they do a deal of Pizza and glass of wine for $15.
Things to do:
Opera House, Blue Mountains tour, Hunter Valley excursions, Bondi beach, Manly beach (very good), Bondi-Coogee coastal walk, open air cinemas, museums...

New Zealand | Kaikoura to Blenheim Highway
Highway 1 from kaikoura to Blenheim was badly damaged by an earthquake and is still being rebuilt. Check before you travel because in the summer it is closed from 7pm to 8am. I don’t know about the winter but the detour is 3 hours extra.

Fiji | Staying in Nadi
Nadi is not worth staying in for more than 2 nights. Hostels on the beach are very relaxed but there isn’t much to do and the town is very small with not much to it. Recommend Bamboo hostel which is near the airport with a free shuttle bus to both the airport and the Port where all island hopping begins from.
