For crossing in and out of Thailand the Mae Sot / Myawaddy crosiing is the most popular one. The one at the very bottom (Ranong / Kawthaung) is usually used by people living in Thailand on visa runs, or if they are heading straight out into the Archipelago. Its worth asking around first or look on lonelyplanet/ thorntree forum or Facebook groups.
There are certainly plenty of hostels / hotels in Kawthaung, Myeik (/Mergui), and Dawei.
If you are looking for mid-range to budget places, off the top of my head, in Kawthaung: Penguin Hostel, Honey Bear, Garden Hotel
For Myeik: Ein Daw Phyu, Grand Jade (both of these a bit spenny), and White Pearl.
Dawei: Golden Guest, Zayar Htet San, Shwe Moung Than (you may be able to find a cheap room at Hotel Dawei, as now is the off-season). Though, note that most people travel to Dawei for the beaches. There is Muangmakan Beach 45 mins out of town (stay at Coconuts Guesthouse) but much better is the Dawei Peninsula (2-3 hours out of town); stay at Paradise Beach Bungalows or Sin Htauk Beach.
All of the above should be on Trip Advisor and Facebook. Note that the Burmese love Facebook, and so if you are not getting a response via email, message them on Facebook. This is usally much quicker.
Plenty of busses, coaches and flights up to Yangon. You can also get the train from Dawei.
